25th Central European Workshop on Quantum Optics

May 15, 2018

The UIB will host an international meeting on quantum optics organised by IFISC (UIB-CSIC) from 21 to 25 May.

The interaction between light and matter, the processing of data or the overcoming of the paradigms of classical physics are just some of the keys that the nearly 200 researchers from 26 countries will debate at the 25th edition of the Central European Workshop of Quantum Optics (CEWQO 2018), an international meeting of reference in the study of optics and quantum information that will be held this year at the Universitat de les Illes Balears from 21 to 25 May.

CEWQO began in the early 1990s in Central Europe and for more than 20 years became one of the most popular annual meetings of European scientists interested in quantum optics and quantum information. Organized each year elsewhere, the conference has traveled across the continent.

By 2018, CEWQO will have four plenary presentations, eighteen guest lectures, more than fifty oral presentations and the presentation of 65 scientific posters, whose three will be selected for a talk to be delivered on Friday. In total, about 170 researchers from 26 countries will open up spaces for reflection on the fundamental aspects of quantum optics, opto-mechanical systems, quantum optics with atoms, ions and molecules and quantum communication, among others. The current edition of CEWQO is a crossover between quantum optics and quantum information, a field of study focused on describing the possibilities of quantum physics in the production, generation and storage of information.

The programme also includes various social activities, such as routes through the historic centre of Palma, a visit to the Roman city of Alcúdia, traditional group photography, an exhibition of posters with food-trucks or a gala dinner with a jazz concert.

The list of plenary speakers includes talks by Markus Aspelmeyer (University of Vienna, Austria), Peter Lodahl (Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark), Christine Silberhorn (University of PaderBorn, Germany) and Andrew White (University of Queensland, Australia).
