I will explore aspects of models of evolutionary dynamics in flowing environments. In the first part of talk I will discuss the dynamics of neutral mutations on a dynamic interaction network shaped by a flowing environment. In particular I will describe how heterogeneity of the network affects coarsening, and time until an absorbing state is reached. In the second part, I will demonstate that a well stirred population is not necessarily well mixed. We show that conventional well-mixed (mean-field) theories do not predict fixation probabilities of mutants correctly, regardless of how fast or thorough the stirring is. We propose a new analytical description in the fast-flow limit. Finally, I will contrast different evolutionary models, and identify which ones of their features affect mutant success. The chance of mutant invasion can be extremal at intermediate flow speeds, depending on the order in which birth and death occur in the evolutionary model.
