Daniel Montesinos, IFISC PhD student, receives UIB’s Master’s Degree Extraordinary Award

May 19, 2025

On Friday, May 16, during the closing ceremony of the 10th Postgraduate Week of the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB), the Extraordinary Awards for Master's Degrees were presented to the students with the best academic records of the 2022–2023 academic year.

Among the recipients was Daniel Montesinos, now a PhD student at the Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems (IFISC, UIB-CSIC), who completed the Master's in Physics of Complex Systems at the same institution.

His master's thesis, entitled “Reservoir Computing with Quantum Memristors”, introduces a novel quantum photonic reservoir computing framework based on a recently proposed quantum memristor design, developed by an experimental team at the University of Vienna. By adding an extra optical mode and using dual-rail encoding to inject previous outputs, the system enhances memory and nonlinear dynamics. The work also outlines future directions to overcome current scalability limitations by leveraging the exponential growth of quantum internal degrees of freedom. They are now collaborating with the quantum optics group in Vienna to deploy their model in their experimental platform.

This award highlights both the research excellence of postgraduate education and IFISC’s commitment to advancing quantum computing and complex systems science.
