The 2025-2026 Master in Physics of Complex Systems (UIB-CSIC) academic year was inaugurated on September 15 at IFISC’s seminar room. The opening session welcomed the 21 new students joining the program this year. The event was chaired by UIB Rector Jaume Carot, who gave a welcome speech highlighting the importance of complex systems science and the role of this master as an international reference in the field.
The session also hosted the 2024–2025 Best Teacher Award, funded by the Fundación Sicómoro, which recognizes excellence in teaching within the program. On this occasion, the award was jointly granted to Raúl Toral and Pere Colet, IFISC researchers with a long-standing commitment to training new generations of students within the IFISC Master. Last year, the award was received by Maxi San Miguel. This is the second year that the award has been celebrated within the framework of the inaugural session.
Following the award presentation, Pere Colet and Raúl Toral presented lectures on Brownian motion and stochastic methods, respectively. Both are two central topics in complex systems research.
The event was attended by the new master students, the UIB Centre for Postgraduate Studies Director Neus Piña and IFISC members, such as Emilio Hernández (IFISC Director) and David Sánchez (Master’s program Director).
The Best Teacher Award is funded by the Fundación Sicómoro, a non-profit organization devoted to promoting the study of complex systems and supporting a new epistemology that surpasses the limitations of the current reductionist analytical method, supporting initiatives related to complexity and complex systems.
