I will review some of the theories that are trying to explain the mechanisms originating the patterns of species observed on a large geographical scale. With tools borrowed from statistical physics, the predictions of these theories can be largely extended. In particular, I will discuss and compare with observational data predictions on extinctions statistics, distributions of taxa, and distributions of species turnover.
