The blackout on Monday, April 28th, across the Iberian Peninsula reveals the importance of the electrical grid in our daily lives. While the cause has not been fully identified, this talk aims at the description of the power grid from the perspective of complex systems in order to provide a background for critically assessing news and discussions: grid stability, synchrony, frequency fluctuations, cascade failures, the role variable renewable energies, demand variability, role of inertia and control capabilities, energy mix, etc.
