Postdoctoral position - DYNDEEP (Dynamics of Temporal Networks: memory and deep learning)

IFISC ( is a joint research institute from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) which develops cutting-edge research in Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems. IFISC is currently recognized as a Unit of Excellence “Maria de Maeztu”.

We aim to recruit a 2 year postdoctoral research assistant funded by the “Europa Excelencia” project DYNDEEP (Dynamics of Temporal Networks: memory and deep learning). The project aims to describe temporal networks as trajectories (time series) of an underlying graph dynamical system. Accordingly, the project has two objectives. First, we aim to construct methods to analyse the evolution of temporal networks using time series analysis and dynamical systems theory. The methodology we build will be validated in synthetic models and then applied to empirical temporal networks. The second objective is to investigate the training process of Neural Networks through this lens. We will interpret the training process of a Neural Network as a temporal network and will apply the previously built set of measures to characterise the training process from a dynamical point of view.

Profile of the applicant:
The applicant should have a PhD in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics or closely related disciplines, and should ideally have a solid research experience both in dynamical systems theory / time series analysis as well as in machine learning, and experience in  network theory. The applicant should also have good coding skills in machine learning (Python) and be able to set up deep learning pipelines. Other desired skills include working experience with large databases, strong analytical skills, and a genuine interest for complex systems and interdisciplinary applications.

  • 24 months contract
  • The annual gross salary will be 30k Euros. The contract also includes all benefits of the Spanish Public Health and Social Security systems. There is additional financial support for the participation in conferences and scientific meetings.
  • Application deadline and starting date: Applications are welcome until the position is filled. Starting date is December 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter.
  • The postdoctoral researcher will work with Dr. Lucas Lacasa, and will also be encouraged to interact with other members of the institute.

Preliminary enquiries as well as formal applications should be sent to Dr. Lucas Lacasa ( with the subject “DYNDEEP postdoc”. Formal applications should enclose:

  • a CV (including a complete publication record);
  • a research statement where you should clearly describe (1) your own ideas on how to address the project, given the description above, and (2) how your skills and previous experience will be of use to successfully develop those ideas;
  • the contact details of two academics that we can contact for reference letters.

IFISC is an equal opportunity institution. Applications to this position by female or minority group scientists are particularly encouraged.
