Engineered dissipation offers a promising alternative to purely coherent control for the preparation and stabilisation of non-classical quantum states. In this work, I investigate how dissipative dynamics and symmetry can be exploited to generate and protect Schrodinger cat states, which provide the foundation for robust quantum information storage.
During this talk, I will consider a driven-dissipative photonic model with two-photon driving and dissipation, possessing a strong Z_2 parity symmetry. In the symmetry-broken regime, the resulting degenerate steady state manifold supports a decoherence-free subspace encoding a logical qubit. Thus, engineered dissipation not only stabilises these states but can also enable passive error correction from certain perturbations.
I then investigate the robustness and limitations of this mechanism through mean-field theory and dynamical quench protocols. In particular, I will examine how single-photon loss reduces strong symmetry to weak symmetry, lifting the steady state degeneracy and changing the encoded information.
Finally, I will discuss ongoing work exploring connection between dissipative symmetry breaking and quantum sensing, where parity dynamics and quantum Fisher information provide tools to characterise the response of cat states to weak perturbations.
