The energy transition require us to shift our current supply to a one based on renewable energies, among which solar energy from photovoltaic panels is one of the most promising technologies. We analyzed data of self-consumption photovoltaic installations in Catalonia in order to understand how the society faces this transition at the individual level, as well as what mechanisms are involved in the spreading of this technology. We applied the diffusion of innovations framework and other methods in order to explore various aspects of the data: the temporal and spatial dependencies of the installations, the correlations that might appear between them, and how an urban region can differ from others. The study unveils the main causes behind the evolution, the role of agent interactions, and point out some possible actions to foster future installations.
