The physical origin and main characteristics of the stimulated
Raman scattering will be reviewed. Its application to the field of
signal amplification in optical fiber communication
systems will be also reviewed. Finally numerical and experimental
results will be presented
regarding various aspects like hybrid EDFA-Raman amplification schemes,
multiple pump
amplification and cascaded amplification.
