Both diffusion-limited aggregates (DLA) and Diffusion-limited-cluster-cluster aggregates (DLCA) have been studied in detail in the 1970s and 1980s. It was thought that the morphology of these fractal aggregates and their growth kinetics are well understood. However, further experiments show unexpected and complex behavior in DLCA aggregation and cluster morphology, as the system becomes cluster dense and ultimately gels. We will present experimental and simulation results and provide a comprehensive description for the aggregation kinetics and morphology of the resulting clusters, from dilute to dense to gelation.  We will also point out how Aerogelation leads to making the world’s lightest solid material and a cost effective way to make graphene.
