Most biological cells have polarity and consequently have two different sides. The mechanisms by which cells break their symmetry are very similar for all organisms. Motivated by recent experiments in worm embryos, we propose a reaction-diffusion model that accounts for cell polarization during early cell divisions. We show that spontaneous symmetry breaking is induced by a mechanism similar to a Turing instability. Many features of this model are in agreement with experimental observations.
