Effects of habitat fragmentation on diversity patterns in a heterogeneous environment

Through a resource-based model, we investigate how the mode of habitat loss and fragmentation can affect the levels of biodiversity in an ecosystem. In our model, habitat loss is performed using a fractal landscape to adjust the roughness of the landscape. We show that both the mode of habitat loss and the level of environmental heterogeneity influence species distribution patterns. We observed a more significant impact of fragmentation on the number of species when fragments are more compact. We also note that a unimodal function well describes the relationship between biodiversity and heterogeneity.
