Profile

Trajectory
I received my undergraduate degree (the German diploma) in physics in 1999 from the University of Münster, with a thesis on supersymmetric Ward identities in the group of Professor Gernot Münster. I was then a PhD student in theoretical physics at the University of Oxford and Balliol College, where I worked on topics related to the Minority Game with Professor David Sherrington. In Oxford a PhD is not called a PhD, but a DPhil. I completed mine in 2004. Subsequently I moved to the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy as a postdoc, and then took up a permanent position at the University of Manchester in 2007, first as a Research Councils UK Research Fellow, then I got promoted through the ranks (Senior Lecturer, Reader, Professor). Since 2019 I have been based at IFISC, where I am now a CSIC tenured researcher (`Investigador Científico').

Degrees and diplomas
2004: Doctor of Philosophy, University of Oxford (Balliol College), UK
1999: Diplom in Physics, University of Münster, Germany
1996: Vordiplom in Physics and in Mathematics, University of Münster
1980: Diploma of play, Parents nursery school Palo Alto, California

Research interests
Dynamics of disordered and stochastic complex systems, in particular individual-based models, with applications in evolutionary game theory, information processing, learning and decision making, stochastic population dynamics, and mathematical biology (gene regulatory systems, anti-microbial resistance).

My work combines theoretical approaches from statistical mechanics (master equation, path integrals, stochastic differential equations) and numerical simulations.
