The Flandes Research Foundation FWO awards Lendert Gelens´s PhD defense at UIB. 27/10/2011

Oct. 27, 2011

Lendert Gelens graduated as Electrotechnical Engineer and as Master in Physics in 2006 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
For his master thesis as Engineer entitled ‘Contributions to the study of cavity- and vortex solitons in nonlinear optics’, he received the Barco / FWO award for diploma works.
In May 2010 he received a Joint PhD in Engineering Sciences and Physics from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium and the Universitat de les Illes Balears, Spain with as promoters: prof. J. Danckaert & dr. G. van der sande (APHY-VUB) and dr. D. Gomila (IFISC-UIB).

The thesis was entitled ’Nonlinear dynamics in photonics systems: Generic models for semiconductor ring lasers & dissipative solitons’. To carry out his PhD research he received a fellowship of the FWO-Vlaanderen. For his work he was also awarded the IEEE Photonics Society Graduate Student Fellowship, an international fellowship awarded to outstanding researchers in the field of photonics. In 2011 he received the Alcatel-Lucent Bell / FWO award for his PhD work.

He has spent six months in the IFISC institute (Universitat de les Illes Balears) in Spain and another six months in the physics department of the University of California, Berkeley, USA. He is currently author or co-author of over 20 journal publications, of which more than half as first author.
Three of his papers have been published in Physical Review Letters, one of the top journals in the field. He is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher of the FWO-Vlaanderen.
