IFISC People: Toni Coll and Mohammadreza Mokhtari

July 9, 2025

We are glad to introduce Toni Coll and Mohammadreza Mokhtari to the other IFISC members.

Toni Coll holds a bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), where he completed his undergraduate thesis on Topological Electronic States in Bilayer Graphene under the supervision of Llorenç Serra. He pursued a master’s degree in Data Science at the University of Cantabria in collaboration with IFCA, focusing on applied Deep Learning models, high-performance computing (HPC), and algorithmic optimization. He joins IFISC as a doctoral candidate, working under the supervision of Leonardo Gollo. His PhD research centers on the study of neuronal dynamics with delayed synapses, aiming to better understand their role in information processing in the brain and their possible relation to neurodegenerative diseases.

Mohammadreza Mokhtari holds a master’s degree in Optical Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Tabriz, Iran, and a bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering from Urmia University, also in Iran. His research was focused on silicon photonics, microring resonator-based optical switches and multilayer optical interconnects. He is a member of the European Training Network consortium POST-DIGITAL+. His research interests include photonic systems, nonlinear dynamics of semiconductor lasers, optical reservoir computing, neuromorphic photonics and laser networks. He joins IFISC as a doctoral candidate under the supervision of Apostolos Argyris and Miguel C. Soriano. He will investigate brain-inspired computing with light, specifically fiber-coupled semiconductor laser networks for fast information processing.
