IFISC Master student wins second prize in TalenTIC awards

Nov. 23, 2018

The technology consultancy Informática El Corte Inglés (IECISA) and the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) have awarded the third edition of the Premis IECI a la Innovació TIC (TalenTIC) prizes for Degree theses (TFG) and Master theses (TFM) aimed at innovations in information and communications technologies (ICT).

IFISC master student Irene Estebánez was awarded second prize in the competition for her Master thesis entitled “Autonomous dynamical systems based on hardware implementations of delay-reservoir computers”, supervised by IFISC researchers Miguel C. Soriano and Ingo Fischer. Estébanez’s M.Sc. thesis presents one of the first Reservoir Computing implementations for autonomous operation, allowing for trainable dynamical behavior. The implementation is able to reproduce the chaotic dynamics of a nonlinear oscillator only from its time series. Irene Estebánez' study provides interesting perspectives for future research on complex dynamical systems.

The main objective of the TalenTIC awards is to encourage technological innovation in the academic field and reward the effort and dedication of students who have made a TFG or TFM with innovative ICT applications. The jury highlighted the transversality of the projects and the potential for practical application of the presented proposals as a transfer of knowledge to society. The second prize is endowed with 500 Euros, in addition to the dissemination of the work in a specialized press report. Estébanez is currently pursuing a PhD at IFISC within the “María de Maeztu” programme.

The awards ceremony was attended by Dr. Llorenç Huguet, rector, and Dr. Jordi Llabrés, vice-rector of Innovation and Institutional Relations of the UIB; the general director of University Policy and Higher Education, Mr. Juan José Montaño; the manager of the BIT Foundation, Biel Frontera; Mr. Julio Sánchez, director of Human Resources of Informática El Corte Inglés and the director of Baleares and Levante, Antonio Carmona.
