Sociomeeting: Air transport through the lens of complex networks: airspace structure and aircraft mobility

Air transport constitutes a key socio-technical infrastructure in terms of global connectivity, international trade and environmental impact. In this introductory talk, I will discuss some of the open problems in air transport and how they can be addressed with a tool quite familiar to all of us: complex networks. Different network representations will be discussed, including the well-known airport network and the airway network. The latter plays a key role in the interplay between airspace structure and aircraft mobility; it constitutes the basis of my last work, and it will be discussed in more detail.
