Fluid trajectories of the hyperbolic type and their associated stable and unstable manifolds are fundamental building blocks in the dynamical systems approach to understand transport by fluid flows. In this talk some approaches to identify such structures in the surface layers of the Mediterranean Sea will be described, by using velocity fields from numerical circulation models and from satellite altimetry.
