The possibility of measuring the amount of non-Markovianity of a given open quantum system dynamics is reviewed and various examples are considered in order to connect the non-Markovianity to typical open systems observables, such as the Loschmidt echo. Furthermore, the relation between non-Markovianity and the orthogonality catastrophe is analyzed.
