Characterizing upper ocean variability near Ibiza and Formentera: A comparative analysis of clustering techniques

This study applies cluster analysis techniques to temporal snapshots of oceanic variables—kinetic energy and sea surface temperature—with the primary aim of evaluating different clustering methods: Self-Organizing Maps (SOM), K-Means, and InfoMap. By applying these algorithms, we identify meaningful structures within the data, facilitating an analysis of the methodologies. The inclusion of InfoMap, a network-based clustering approach, provides a unique perspective on the hierarchical community organization within oceanic data.
