In this talk I would first like to discuss the basic ideas in
the field of ultra cold atomic gases, stressing the inherently
cross-disciplinar character of the field. In the second part of my talk
I will comment on some more specific research topics, including
nonlinear physics with Bose-Einstein condensates, spinor quantum gases,
artificial electromagnetism, and strongly-correlated atomic gases.
