In this talk we will analyze the emergence of synchronization phenomena in quantum systems, commenting on different approaches to address synchronization in the quantum regime. In particular, we will present two distinct mechanisms that are behind the emergence of monochromatic oscillations in quantum optical systems, ranging from small systems of coupled dissipative qubits to mesoscopic atomic clouds. These mechanisms are related to the presence of long-lived collective excitations and coalescence in the dynamical system. Moreover, we will show the close relation between these synchronization  phenomena and subradiance. Finally, we will review some seminal results about the quantum version of the driven van der Pol oscillator, highlighting challenges and interesting questions of this topic.
