With the accumulation of various urban data, we are able to better sense the activities of residents and the pulse of the whole city. Based on cell phone data and proper algorithms, we can get relatively accurate trajectories of individuals, travel demand, and distribution of active population (AP), which can be applied to evaluate the interaction patterns, transportation efficiency, intervene epidemic spreading, predict the dynamic air pollution exposure of residents, and make better urban modeling. From a dynamic and interactive perspective, based on the concept of AP, we build a simple mechanistic model that can give explanations for the origins of both mesoscopic spatial scaling laws within cities and macroscopic scaling laws across cities. Such a model can be easily modified to investigate the co-evolution of city clusters and the renewal of cities.
