Sociomeeting: When the wind blows (or not): Stress and Efficiency of the German Transmission Grid under High-Renewable Scenarios

Broadcast soon

Germany’s transition toward a highly renewable electricity system creates increasing operational stress for the transmission grid. Wind and solar generation are variable and spatially concentrated, while electricity demand is distributed differently across the country. The aim is to analyse how the German transmission grid behaves under a high-renewables scenario and under different wind conditions. An energy system model is used to represent the grid and solve an optimal power flow, allowing the resulting dispatch and flows to be assessed. The study focuses on operational effects such as congestion, curtailment, load shedding, price variations, and CO2 emissions. By comparing different scenarios, the analysis seeks to better understand where the grid becomes stressed and what challenges and consequences the energy transition may bring.
