New experimental results for excitable waves in broad-area vertical-cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers (VCSOAs) will be presented. In this 2D system, excitable waves cannot propagate through the whole system, but they are spatially confined. A model that explains this phenomenology as self-confinement of the excitable waves due to a Turing instability of the optical field will be presented.
