Abrupt transitions leading to population extinction in bacteria in Petri dishes on the one hand, and mice infections involved in epidemics on the other, will be discussed on the basis of a simple model. Exact analytic studies are possible in the former and approximation procedures are necessitated in the latter. Experiments for the verification of predicted phenomena will be described, some already performed, others proposed.
