Mechanical proofs of the second law: ergotropy and passive states
We review the different formulations of the second law, their role in non-equilibrium phenomena, and how they can be derived from classical mechanics. We focus on two distinct aspects of this problem: the positivity of entropy production in systems coupled to reservoirs and the concept of ergotropy—the extractable energy from an arbitrary probabilistic state.
