Already for almost two decades a growing community of physicists has been interested in language dynamics.

It will be discussed, how complexity theory and the tools of statistical mechanics can be applied to linguistic problems.

In particular, different examples will be presented demonstrating the challenges in revealing the languages groups and understanding the processes leading to the currently observed language distributions in space.
