The role of heterogeneity in Lotka-Volterra systems

Broadcast soon

Generalized Lotka-Volterra (gLV) models have long been studied to understand the dynamics of complex ecological communities. In this work, we enrich this framework by exploring what happens when we move beyond standard assumptions and randomize the parameters governing the ecosystem. We show how Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT) and generating functional analysis allow for the analytical simplification of these complex, high-dimensional systems. Specifically, our current focus is on the randomization of the species' carrying capacities (K). By drawing K from various probability distributions, we reduce the system to an effective single-species process and analyse how the shape and variance of these distributions impact the macroscopic stability, diversity, and equilibrium properties of the community.
