The Paradox of Openness: Community-Based Approaches to Combating Misinformation Online

Broadcast soon

The openness of online platforms is both their greatest strength and their deepest vulnerability. Wikipedia demonstrates how large-scale collaboration can reliably produce knowledge, whereas social media platforms often amplify polarization, misinformation, and the creation of echo chambers. This seminar explores why some open systems succeed while others fail. Drawing on empirical studies of Wikipedia conflicts, social media dynamics, and recent experiments with community-driven fact-checking, I will highlight the mechanisms through which collaboration fosters consensus, diversity strengthens outcomes, and moderate conflict can improve content quality. I will also discuss the limitations of algorithmic fixes and the potential of hybrid human–machine approaches to support healthier online information ecosystems.
