Gender & Science: Why do we need to problematize it? What can we do?

When some decades ago a concern started about low numbers of women in science, the first strategy to address this was to “fix the women” or “fix the numbers”. Although necessary, this was not enough: another phenomenon, the glass ceiling, made us think that the problem was in the system, which structurally reproduces and maintains inequalities. That “fix the system” approach promotes equality through structural change in research institutions and universities. Further, a third strategy emerged, that of “fix science” which, by integrating sex, gender and intersectional analysis works against unconscious biases and stereotyped ideas of gender, and stimulates excellence and innovation in science & technology.

The talk will tackle some figures, as well as the structural change approaches, measures and projects such as the SUPERA (Supporting the Promotion of Equality in Research and Academia). Unconscious bias, gendered stereotypes and resistance to gender structural change, and how we can deal with them, will also be addressed. As recent research, I will also present some data on a study on the gendered impact on working conditions, academic & care time usage and production during Covid-19 lockdowns, performed under SUPERA.
