Intra-motif essentialities in flow networks shaped by simulated evolution

Node and link essentiality are by definition very local tools that help elucidate the specific function of motifs within a network. We used them to study the impact of bias introduced by virtue of the architecture of a motif itself and discover functional differences in motifs between different types of flow networks that were indistinguishable at the level of motif signatures. An essentiality rating of motifs allows us to infer what mechanisms of robustness may be at work in a given real network.
