A comparative analysis of time-delayed models of cancer therapies at the vascular stage

Angiogenesis is acknowledged as an essential mechanism for tumor spreading and metastasis of neoplasic diseases. Consequently, anti-angiogenic therapy has been proposed as a complementary or an alternative strategy to the traditional cytotoxic
therapies. This work considers models of time delayed differential equations that describes the dynamics of tumors at the vascular stage (after the angiogenic process has triggered) under the action of chemotherapy and anti-angiogenic therapy. Due to endothelial cells, in the no treatment situation, the state where cancer cells win the competition with the normal cells prevails on the interior state. Combining local analysis with numerical results, we conclude that the anti-angiogenic therapy is able to reduce the tumor but not to eliminate it; only high doses of chemotherapy destroys the tumor. Therefore the combined effect of both therapies is the best strategy to reduce significantly the tumor.
