3-D spatio-temporal behaviour in excitable systems: from propagation to arryththmias

Abstract:
Biological systems are intrinically distribuied in physical space, and so many biological phenomena are spatio-temporal rather than temporal: in physical terms, produced by waves, rather thn oscillations.
We describe how we have moved from neurobiological problems, that can can be modelled by ODEs and coupled systems of ODEs, towards PDEs in the complicated, anisotropic geometry of the moving heart.
This will be illustrated by compational, and experimental/ results, in ther context of cardiac arrhythmias.,
