Monday 7th. Palma historical and Artistic City Walk.

Departure from Plaça Espanya (Monument to Jaume III, across the street from Metro Station) at 20h.

Beautifully arranged as a fan towards the sea, the city is marked by the cultures that have lived on the island along its history. Palma invites you to discover its buildings and the monuments that portray the evolution of aesthetic trends during the centuries that are visible in more than 700 streets in its historic centre. This is where you will find the footprint of all those civilisations that have contributed to its building.

Wednesday 9th. Excursion and Conference Dinner.

15h - Departure from UIB campus to Valldemossa.

The village of Valldemossa is located a mere 17 kilometres away from Palma, in the middle of the valley of Sierra de Tramuntana, 400 kilometres above sea level. Part of the village goes up into the mountain slope, creating steep streets and beautiful natural miradors. The whole compound is surrounded by lush forests, with olive and almond trees that are irrigated by the abundant springs in the area.

16h15 aprox. - Guided visit to the Cartuja de Valdemossa and piano concert at 17 h.

Carthusian monastery. The monks were in residence here from its foundation at the end of the 14th century until their departure in 1835. The majority of the structure visible today is from its neo-Classical remodelling. The church was built in 1751 and its vaults have frescoes by Bayeu, Goya’s brother-in-law. It is very famous for having served as residence for the writer George Sand and musician Chopin. It is home to the Municipal Museum, which has exhibits dealing with the historic-artistic heritage of the Carthusians, mementoes of the residence of Chopin and George Sand, and a range of art from the 15th-20th centuries. The tourist office is also located here.
