Stochastic and deterministic approaches to generalised random Lotka-Volterra communities

Broadcast soon

We study the Generalised Random Lotka-Volterra model, usually employed to describe biodiversity and ecological communities. We sought to study through numerical simulations the dynamics and properties of these communities for different choices of model parameters such as the strength, variance and correlation of the interaction coefficients. We studied the model from a deterministic and stochastic approach, and we attempted to identify and explain the differences that both approaches may present.

In general terms, by increasing the variance in interactions the system is destabilised, and the number of extinctions and the species abundances grow. However, by raising the competitiveness in the ecosystem, stability is promoted. These results are evaluated with existing theoretical predictions for the deterministic model.

Introducing demographic stochascitiy into the model, species abundances fluctuate and consequently there are more species who die out than in the deterministic model. Moreover, the relative fluctuations decrease with the variance of the interactions, and the abundances of stochastic species seems to move increasingly away from the deterministic ones in the stationary state.
