Dynamics of language competition
Language competition is considered from the perspective of social consensus. Models of social consensus are used to address the question of how and when a single social option is adopted, or when several options coexist. Mechanisms and networks of social interactions are common to problems of opinion dynamics, social norms, general cultural interaction and language dynamics. Specific models for language competition are analyzed within this general context. In particular, the role of bilingualism, social and community network structure, and network dynamics are discussed.
