2nd BioSim Conference

The 2nd BioSim conference

The second scientific conference for the BioSim Network will take place in the island of Mallorca, Spain, from October 18th to October 21st 2006 at the Cala Viņas hotel. . The Cala Viņas hotel is situated by the seaside in Magaluf, about 20 km from the city of Palma de Mallorca. The first day of the conference, October 18th, will be devoted to intense courses in biochemistry, cellular biology, physiology, simulation methods, nonlinear dynamics, etc. These courses represent an important component in BioSim's training activities and will be given by members of the Network Faculty. Participants who want to follow one of the courses should arrive on October 17th. Participants not interested in these training activities can arrive on the 18th. Recommended departure date for everybody is October 22nd.

The objectives of the conference are:

  • to present significant new scientific results obtained by the BioSim participants
  • to provide a global overview of the advances in the network during its second year, and
  • to foster collaboration among network participants.
In response to suggestions by BioSim participants, the coordinator can invite guests external to the network. The preliminary programme will be available in September.

The programme will be composed of solicited and contributed talks and include time slots for group discussion and poster presentations. The talks can be proposed by the BioSim participants and abstracts of proposed talks must be received by the network coordinator (erik.mosekilde@fysik.dtu.dk), before July 31, 2006. The programme committee consists of the activity area heads and the network coordinator.

Description of BioSim

BioSim is a Network of Excellence funded by the European Union under the 6th Framework Program with Computer assisted modelling for drug discovery and testing as the main research topic. The network is focused on structuring efforts to develop simulation models for the design, selection and testing of drugs.

BioSim is composed of 26 academic, 10 industrial and 4 regulatory partners. The BioSim Network commands a wide range of biomedical and physiological expertise. At the same time, the network involves leading experts in pharmacokinetics, computer simulation, and complex systems theory.

The purpose of the network is to develop in silico simulation models of cellular, physiological and pharmacological processes to provide a deeper understanding of the biological mechanisms, in order to help the pharmaceutical industry establish a more rational drug development process.

The projects of the BioSim Network include studies of pancreatic hormone release and interactions among pancreatic cells, protein phosphorylation in human fat cells, flux control and metabolism in striated muscle cells, calcium-induces calcium release and activation of smooth muscle cells, autonomous oscillations in nerve cells and the use of deep brain stimulation to desynchronize cellular spiking behavior, nephron pressure and flow regulation, cardiac arrhythmia, mental disorders and sleep-wake cycles, the function of new anti-cancer molecules, drug absorption and metabolism, insulin-glucose regulation and the treatment of diabetes, chronotherapy of cancer, and the building of virtual populations of relevance to pharmacokinetic studies.

BioSim also engages in a wide range of educational activities, including the training of PhD students, specialized courses for industry and regulatory experts, and communication with the public.
