Title: Effects of habitat fragmentation on diversity patterns in a heterogeneous environment
Speaker: Viviane Moraes de Oliveira, Departamento de Física - UFRPE
Abstract:

Through a resource-based model, we investigate how the mode of habitat loss and fragmentation can affect the levels of biodiversity in an ecosystem. In our model, habitat loss is performed using a fractal landscape to adjust the roughness of the landscape. We show that both the mode of habitat loss and the level of environmental heterogeneity influence species distribution patterns. We observed a more significant impact of fragmentation on the number of species when fragments are more compact. We also note that a unimodal function well describes the relationship between biodiversity and heterogeneity.

Title: Modelling Human Behaviour and Cognition with Network Science
Speaker: Sofia Teixeira, University of Lisbon.
Abstract:

Networks are a simple and intuitive framework to model evolutionary events, human behaviour and cognition. In this talk, I will walk you through two network science approaches to evaluate how centrality and neighborhood structure can be key to infer collective behaviour in two different case studies: eliciting collective fairness in a multiplayer bargaining game, and reconstructing the mindset expressed in multiple suicide notes.

Title: Photonic reservoir computing in optical communications: does it have a chance against digital signal processing?
Speaker: Apostolos Argyris, IFISC
Abstract:

The latest improvements in optical communications include always digital signal processing assistance. Machine learning and neural networks were also incorporated, to enforce problem-solving in tasks that are demanding in terms of complexity and computational speed. These algorithms aim at expanding the reach of fiber transmission channels, improving data recovery and optical routing. In this context, reservoir computing (RC) inspired hardware photonic implementations that can offer revolutionary solutions. The latter were initially tested in wireless channel equalization. Lately, they were endorsed for modulation format identification, optical header recognition, and data recovery. Here, I discuss the requirements that analog, photonic RC implementations need to fulfil for real-time signal processing in optical communicati
ons. While offline processing was successfully demonstrated, the challenges to address the data rates of the latest communication protocols are still significant.
