In this talk the usage of large-scale computing in CERN LHC physics programme will be presented. The motivations for the setting up of a worldwide computing infrastructure (the LHC Computing Grid) will be discussed and its actual deployment and use reviewed, with a special emphasis on the CERN computing centre.
Finally also some reviews of the innovation being introduced at CERN in the area of infrastructure (Ceph object stores) and cloud services (CERNBOX) will be presented.
Massimo Lamanna is responsible for the CERN scientific data repository presently holding about 100 PB and he will give examples of the challenges of handling this amount of physics data for several thousands users.
