IFISCComputing Services Unit

Computing Services Unit

Introduction

This is the Unit that manages the computational resources at IFISC. It aims at providing the software and hardware configurations most suitable for IFISC scientists. The unit takes care of the following tasks:

  • Maintenance of hardware (computational servers, desktops and laptops), of software (operating systems, compilers, libraries and other scientific software) and of IFISC web (public pages, databases and intranet).
  • Design and assembly of upgrades for Nuredduna, the main computational cluster, as well as of new computational servers.
  • Integration of the network of deskptops and laptops with the computational clusters.
  • Advise on algorithms for scientific computation.

Staff

The computer technicians of IFISC are Rubén Tolosa (ruben@ifisc.uib-csic.es) and Edu Herraiz (edu@ifisc.uib-csic.es).
Juan José Enseñat (ensenyat@ifisc.uib-csic.es) is the main computer technician from the CSIC administrative unit for IMEDEA and IFISC and provides assistance to both institutes.

The IFISC Computational Services Unit is supervised by two senior scientists:
Pere Colet (pere@ifisc.uib-csic.es) and Manuel Matías (manuel@ifisc.uib-csic.es)

Equipment

The main computer for intensive numerical calculations is Nuredduna.
Nuredduna is a High Throughput Computing cluster designed and built at IFISC using out-of-the-shelf components from the personal computer market. At present, nuredduna has 350 computational cores.

Other servers at IFISC include: Dolsa (disk server with 5 TB of disk capacity), Molinar (server for backup) and Illetes (with two opteron dual core and 8GB of RAM) and Salmunia (with two opteron quad core and 32 GB of RAM) used to run programs that require large amount of memory, for data visualization, and to run Mathematica, Matlab or Maple.

All the above is complemented by a network of about 50 desktop and laptop computers as well as for several laser and laser color printers and multifunctional systems.
